Why is there no sunscreen on the terrace?

We started HipHot because we were surprised that there's no sunscreen available when you're sitting on a patio. And when do you sit on a patio? Exactly! When the sun is shining.

A few years ago, we were enjoying ourselves on a terrace along the Rijnkade in Arnhem. You know, one of those cozy afternoons with friends that just seems to go on forever. We didn't really want it to, but we were soaking up the sun. No umbrella (we now know that wouldn't have helped either) and, strangely enough, no sunscreen available at the café. We felt like a missed opportunity.

When we started looking, we noticed that sunscreen is practically impossible to find, even though the sun is shining brighter than ever these days. When we did some research abroad, we learned that in Australia, for example, it's quite common to get sunscreen for free.

Is there even demand for it?

There was only one thing to do: test it. We ordered sunscreen dispensers abroad and called a few festivals to ask if we could leave our sunscreen dispensers at your place for free to test. We were allowed to. And we noticed there was a real demand. At the first festival, they called us two hours after the festival opened: "Do you have any more? We're almost out, and our guests are queuing for the dispenser." Haha, we had a good feeling about that! But we learned even more. Not every dispenser is strong enough for intensive use. For example, you shouldn't have a dispenser you have to pull. We discovered that it breaks. Automatic dispensers clog up quickly. The pressure dispenser works best when combined with the right amount of sunscreen, and it's handy to have sunscreen refills that you can quickly change without getting your hands dirty.

Then you solve it yourself!

Well, we thought, if it frustrates us, there must be others who feel the same way. And we now know that there are a lot of them 😉 That's why we started our own mission: sunscreen everywhere to help people enjoy themselves protected and reduce skin cancer. Will you help us?
